Research Centres and Labs

Desforges Lab:

The Ecotoxicology and Wildlife Stress Lab is interested in how ecological and anthropogenic factors influence how pollutants move in the environment, accumulate in organisms, and their potential impacts on the physiology, health, and fitness of wildlife populations. One of the overarching practical goals of our work is to improve chemical management and wildlife risk assessment and to promote improved environmental health. Our lab uses a variety of research approaches that help garner mechanistic understandings of human-wildlife-environment interactions across biological scales (molecular to population level). Some common approaches include genomics, molecular biology, in vitro experiments, biogeochemical tracers, ecophysiology, biologging, bioenergetics, population biology, and ecological modeling. Through this framework, we hope to better understand processes and to develop predictive models to link physiological responses across biological scales, and thus help drive 21st century wildlife conservation and chemical management.
